WEST COAST RUGBY UNION SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
From its foundation in 1890 until 1900, the senior championship was contested for a trophy known as the Senior Cup. Reports on matches were as infrequent as the games themselves probably due to the long distances to travel for fixtures. The 1890 championship was won by Reefton whose team included several “imports” attending the Reefton School of Mines. the 1891 championship contested by Hokitika, Greymouth, White Star, Brunner and Reefton was won by Hokitika.
Hokitika and Greymouth dominated the next few years but I was unable to cite any results. Greymouth won in 1898 1900 With Brunner (Ie: Wallsend) in 1899 . In 1901 the Union instituted the championship as it is known today, the winners being Greymouth, followed by Brunner Black Diamond in 1902. In 1903 Mr F. Rogen, proprietor of the Royal Hotel, presented a cup for the senior championship, the cup to become the property of the winner if won twice in succession or three times at intervals. In addition he donated a football to the winning team. Because of delay in obtaining the cup, it did not become the trophy until 1905 and it was won outright by Star in 1911.
A new cup named Watsons Number 10 – donated by James Watson of Dundee, Scotland was at stake for the next decade being won outright in 1920 by Star. The third trophy, the Irving Cup and a very beautiful one indeed, was donated in 1921 by Irvine and Co, Great Western Vineyards, Australia. The first holders were Marist Brothers Old Boys, followed by Star in 1922, 1923, 1924, and they became outright holders. The next trophy appeared to be the McKechnie Cup, won by Excelsior in 1928 -1929.
In 1930 the Wallsend-Taylorville Estates Cup became the trophy and as such it remain today. It should be noted that at various times Westland sub-Union ran its own senior competition. When such was the case the winning teams from West Coast Rugby Union Championship and Westland Championship, played off for the McLean Shield.
In 1931 Black and White Whisky donated caps for the winning team, which was Cobden. Kanieri, winner of the Championship in 1927 were unable to defend the title in 1928 as most of their players had transferred to Excelsior and Kiwi clubs.
2014 see’s another new champion on the West Coast , Grey Valley defeats Kiwi RFC 26 – 07 in the Final at Cass Square , Hokitika to claim their first title , Grey Valley rugby has been going from strength to strength since re-entering the West Coast competition in 2008.
Founded in 1981, Grey Valley looked to have ended, with dwindling rural player numbers forcing them to exit the competition in 2001 and now 13 years later they can call themselves West Coast Champions.
In 2015 Blaketown reclaimed the Trophy they last held in 2013 with a convincing 20 to 3 victory over Kiwi RFC and in doing so winning the title for the 25th time since their first victory in 1945.
After Blaketown’s victory in 2015 over Kiwi , Kiwi RFC have struck back with “Back to Back to Back to Back to BACK” Titles in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023” to give them 11 titles since their first in 2000 and 2003 the 2016- 2017- 2018- 2019-2020*2021-2022–2023 titles are their first successful defence to go back to back to back to back to back.
After 8 years of Kiwi RFC dominance West Coast Club Rugby welcomes WESTS RUGBY to the winners circle. 2024 Became WESTS first title after the merger of St Marys & Excelsior Clubs. A huge congratulations also to Kiwi RFC whose reign was ended on 8 straight Titles and their impressive 93 game winning streak.
