September 5, 2024 News

The third edition of the Jennian Homes Secondary Schools Girls 10’s concluded yesterday at Craddock Park in Westport, following three exhilarating days of rugby action. Supported by Secondary Schools Sport NZ and NZ Rugby, the tournament attracted teams and athletes from around the South Island, making it a highly anticipated event.

Throughout the first two days, the Greymouth High School team faced off against formidable opponents, including Timaru Girls High, the Stoke-Queen Charlotte College combined team, Marlborough Girls College, Rangiora High School, and St Andrews College. They concluded their campaign on the final day with a match against Buller High School.

With the pathways to professional careers in women’s rugby now stronger than ever, this tournament provided a crucial platform for players to not only challenge themselves against top-tier competition but also to catch the attention of selectors from the Super Rugby Aupiki side, Matatū, and NZ Rugby.

Buller Rugby Football Union CEO and tournament organiser Andrew Duncan, remarked that the annual Jennian Homes Secondary Schools Girls 10’s has quickly become a cornerstone event on the Union’s calendar. “Since its inception in 2022, this tournament has experienced significant growth each year. We’re delighted to host 12 teams this year, ranging from Picton in the north to Winton in the south,” Duncan said.

“The event at Craddock Park has been blessed with exceptional weather, creating an enjoyable environment where the girls have displayed their remarkable skills. Women’s rugby is thriving, and we are proud to support its continued development through this fantastic event,” he added.

For the Greymouth High School girls’ team, the tournament was an invaluable opportunity to test themselves against high-caliber opposition. While the results may not have gone in their favour, head coach and West Coast Rugby Development Officer, Robbie Maitland, emphasised that it was a significant learning experience. He expressed confidence that the team would grow and develop from the challenges they faced.
