{"id":5298,"date":"2018-05-08T15:01:58","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T03:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westcoastrfu.com\/wp\/?p=5298"},"modified":"2025-03-03T22:41:05","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T09:41:05","slug":"westport-too-polished-for-marist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westcoastrfu.com\/wsct\/2018\/05\/08\/westport-too-polished-for-marist\/","title":{"rendered":"Westport too polished for Marist"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_5299\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5299\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5299\" src=\"https:\/\/westcoastrfu.com\/wsct\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Codey.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"585\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Picture of standout Marist flanker Cody Fairhall<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\"> Westport defeated Marist 21-7\u00a0in their Jubilee Trophy\u00a0fixture played in wet conditions at Patterson Park in\u00a0Westport on Saturday.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Westport totally dominated the early stages of the game\u00a0with Marist barely getting their hands on the ball, and when they did, numerous handling errors and a surprising\u00a0lack of intensity proved costly at crucial times, giving their hosts a raft of possession. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Westport were duly rewarded for their early domination, when they\u00a0opened the scoring in the 12th minute\u00a0when lock Rangi Piri crashed over ten meters to the right hand side of the posts, after multiple phases of strong\u00a0forward drives,\u00a0with Andrew Norton-Taylor converting to give Westport a 7-0 lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Soon after,\u00a0Marist fullback Jonah Huntley used his silky side-stepping and pace\u00a0to spark several attacks that\u00a0threatened the Westport\u00a0try line\u00a0on a couple of occasions, but was well contained by the determined Westport cover\u00a0defence each time.\u00a0Marist&#8217;s best first\u00a0half scoring\u00a0opportunity came in the 23rd minute when Corey Deans hit the posts with a penalty kick\u00a0from close range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Westport were again rewarded for their strong forward play, when prop forward Jack Best scored a try in the 32nd minute\u00a0following another series of strong pick and goes close to the Marist line by their\u00a0forwards. Norton-Taylor again converted to take the score to 14-0, a score that\u00a0Westport would take to the half time break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">The introduction of Maleli Mudu to first five\u00a0by Marist at half time helped spark the Marist team, and he proved a constant threat with ball in hand, but it was his forwards that helped get them on the scoreboard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Following a sustained period of attack by the Marist forwards,\u00a0flanker Paddrick Davison\u00a0was driven over the line by his support\u00a0only to be adjudged\u00a0held up,\u00a0but\u00a0when the Westport team illegally\u00a0wheeled the ensuing 5 meter\u00a0scrum, referee Andrew Duncan had no hesitation in awarding Marist a penalty try making the score 14-7 in the 55th minute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Any hopes of a comeback for Marist were soon snubbed out in the 63rd minute, with a thrilling backline move by Westport\u00a030 meters out from the Marist line,\u00a0finished off brilliantly\u00a0by fullback Joel Hands who hit the line at pace and had too much speed for the Marist defence\u00a0to score outwide, with Norton-Taylor again converting to give his team a scoreline of 21-7, a lead\u00a0that they&#8217;d hold onto until the final whistle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Westport coach Huey McMillan\u00a0said it was a good game of rugby despite the weather, and he was thrilled with his forwards who dominated for long periods of time. &#8220;For us the Perata brothers, Matt at number 8, and Kahu at open side flanker had great games, and I was really happy with their performances, while in the backs Corey Jenkins at halfback, and fullback Joel Hands had standout games&#8221; McMillan said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Marist coach Josh Costello praised\u00a0the Westport side for their very well deserved win. &#8220;Westport played a great game in the conditions, and not only outplayed us, but out\u00a0passioned us as well&#8221;. \u00a0&#8220;We knew we were going to be challenged today, and I think\u00a0this result is a massive wakeup call for our players, and I&#8217;ll be addressing areas for improvement this coming week at training\u00a0.&#8221; Costello said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: 14px;\">Despite being disappointed with his sides performance, Costello singled out open side flanker Cody Fairhall for his tireless 80 minute\u00a0effort.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;
