{"id":4996,"date":"2017-09-14T09:00:24","date_gmt":"2017-09-13T21:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westcoastrfu.com\/wp\/?p=4996"},"modified":"2025-03-03T22:37:53","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T09:37:53","slug":"air-new-zealand-rippa-rugby-championship-set-to-kick-off-in-wellington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westcoastrfu.com\/wsct\/2017\/09\/14\/air-new-zealand-rippa-rugby-championship-set-to-kick-off-in-wellington\/","title":{"rendered":"Air New Zealand Rippa Rugby Championship set to kick off in Wellington"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>West Coast Represented by Grey Main School<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>200 Rippa Rugby players from 20 schools will compete at the national Championships.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>World Champion Black Fern, Kendra Cocksedge and All Black, Keven Mealamu to attend.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup trophy on display for the duration of the tournament.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Selected finals day matches to be streamed live on Facebook.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two hundred Rippa Rugby stars are ready to kick off a two-day tournament in Wellington to compete for the Air New Zealand Rippa Rugby Championship.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 20 school teams representing their Provincial Unions throughout New Zealand will compete against each other.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify to represent their school and province over 600 schools played in qualifying tournaments around the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the first time, this year\u2019s tournament will see selected finals day matches streamed live on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SmallBlacksTV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Small Blacks TV Facebook page<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New Zealand Rugby General Manager Community and Provincial Rugby, Brent Anderson, said the Championship was an event that young rugby players aim for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a really special opportunity for kids to represent not only their school, but also their province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic event. The teams come to the capital with their teammates and for many it\u2019s their first time to Wellington. They make new friends from all over New Zealand and have a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the teams in the tournament have worked really hard all season and this is their reward. It\u2019s their chance to test their skills against kids from around the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Small Blacks Ambassadors Kendra Cocksedge, who has recently returned from the victorious Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup campaign in Ireland, and Keven Mealamu will attend the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The event will also provide a special opportunity for participants and spectators to view and take photos with the Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup, which will be on display for the duration of the championship.<\/p>\n<p>Rippa Rugby is a fun, safe non-contact form of the game where primary school-aged girls and boys participate together in mixed teams.<\/p>\n<p>Teams are made up of five boys and five girls, aged 10 and 11-years old, giving youngsters from the smaller rural regions the chance to compete against larger schools from the cities.<\/p>\n<p>All players will be up for an APPLAUD Award given out to a player who demonstrates good sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
