Although West Coast won only two championship matches in l996, one win was at the expense of semi-finalists Mid Canterbury and the performance of the Coast players on that occasion was full of merit. The team also did well in the Seddon Shield tournament to hold Nelson Bays to a two point margin.
West Coast had an industrious forward pack which showed good ball-retention skills. Loose forwards Mark De Goldi, Craig Clark, Tony Rasmussen and Nathan Mirfin covered a lot of ground, tackling well and supporting the backs in attacking movements. De Goldi in particular stood out for his storming play. Arthur Gillman ensured a steady supply of ball from the lineouts while Jason Hauraki and Carl Perkins toiled away vigorously. Former Canterbury halfback Allan Lindsay showed his experience and gave fine all-round performances to be the best of the Coast backs.
Phil Dickson impressed at second five-eighth and Shaun Fahey was a steady fullback who looked for attacking opportunities.Michael Foster made another valuable contribution to the points table and is now West Coast`s top scorer.
