West Coast had a depressing season, registering only one win and finishing bottom equal in the third division. With the exception of the second Buller game, the defeats suffered were by wide margins and there was little for Coast supporters to enthuse about.

Coach Rob Dew had to call on 43 players for 11 games, far too many for a small union which does not have an unlimited supply of players up to first-class standard. Constant changes of personnel ruined any chance of building a good combination.

Tony O’Regan, who played so well in 1987, missed four games through injury and his absence had an adverse effect on the functioning of the backline. Although not as dynamic as in the previous season, O’Regan was the team’s best back. Other backs to stand out were David Foster, especially when playing at fullback, and Mark Costello, a capable halfback.

Darryl Byrne, who captained the side, was a hard-working lock who never gave up in spite of the odds and he had line support from Jem Pupich at number eight. Andrew Mirfin improved with each game and shows much promise.

No West Coast players were selected for higher honours in l988.
