West Coast had a dismal season, losing all its games and being demoted to the Third Division for 1986.

New selector Ken Beams called on 16 new players and used 33 players altogether, which made the chance of building any sort of a combination very remote. The Coast’s best effort was against King Country, when it went close to winning, scoring 15 points to its opponent’s six in the second half The Seddon Shield match against Marlborough also saw a fair effort from West Coast, but otherwise there was nothing to enthuse about.

Some individuals tried hard against disheartening odds and they deserved credit for their attitude. Among these, Troy Forsyth stood out as a tireless worker while rugged prop Paul Davidson, who played every game, was another to render sterling service. There two were well supported by prop Wayne Stanton, one of the most promising of the newcomers.

Wayne Gugich took his points total to 285 to break his own record and had a reasonable season under the circumstances. Lance Rae, a newcomer to first-class rugby, looked to have potential with his strong running and determined tackling and Stu Wyness was a sound defender. Mark Cullen was another solid tackler and a smart runner with the ball.

No West Coast players were called on above provincial level in 1985.
