1960 Season

WEST COAST COLOURS: RED AND WHITE HOOPS
(Founded, 1890; Affiliated, 1893)
Selector: Mr.E.G.Walker

After the initial difficulties in selection were overcome, West Coast generally proved a useful side, particularly when they gave the New Zealand XV. good opposition and surprised Marlborough by lifting the Seddon Shield. On the other hand, that trophy was won by Buller at first time of asking and Canterbury at Lancaster Park proved an entirely different proposition to Canterbury on Rugby Park, Greymouth. Indeed the Coast could well have been successful in this first match of the season.

The whole side combined well in the Seddon Shield challenge fixture, the pack playing with fire and vigor to give clever backs in McAra, Thorpe and James the chances they deserved and made good use of. Captain this year was Morton, No. 8 forward who had represented Otago in 1956, and with Ross and a new representative, Chadwick, provided a trio of forwards who chased the ball unceasingly. Rogers and Lindbom were a solid pair at lock, with Bergman and McPherson sound props to support hooker Richardson. Kermode was a neat and lively half-back, with McAra a most impressive five-eighth, with a quick eye for an opening, good hands and altogether a constructive player.

Thorpe ran well at centre, and James, another newcomer, and Cant had pace and ability on the wings. In the early games, Burnett created a good impression at full-back, but he then returned to King Country and King ably filled the berth. Fong was another new representative to create a good impression, and more should be seen of him. Only eight of the 27 players were new, Gooch, Thorpe and Kermode having last played for the Coast in 1958, Champion in 1957, Venis in 1956 and Tinetti in as far back as 1953. Surgenor took part in the New Zealand Trials, and represented South Island in September, but by then he had transferred to Marlborough.
