West Coast showed improvement to win two games and take fifth place in the third division. It was appropriate that this improved showing coincided with the union‘s centennial year, which was celebrated over Queens’ Birthday weekend.
The team played well as a unit with the forwards winning better possession than has been customary in recent years. This made things easier for halfback Mark Costello, who had his best season yet.
Shaun Drylie and John Tainui were promising wings and Geoff Ross had another satisfying season at fullback. Andrew Mirfin, Winston Monk, John Walton, Steve Keenan, Glen Kearns and Nathan Mirfin all worked well in the forwards. Monk captained the team, Keenan leading against South Canterbury.
No players from West Coast won higher honours in 1990.
