Rugby report – Marist U12 vs South Westland 5/5/18
The Marist under 12 rugby team ventured south to take on South Westland at Hari Hari on Saturday.
It was a dry and mild day which made for great conditions to play Rugby.
Marists forwards laid a good platform for the backs to run off and the front row of Kade Johnson, Ben Stringer and Forwards player of the day Harrison Whittaker stood up well to a much bigger opposition front row in their first game with contested scrums. New recruit, Robbie Lyford, was all toil and hard work as was Max Mirfin and Harry Shaw put is his usual 100% effort.
No 8, Jayden Secker made several strong runs and scored a brace of tries.
The forwards hard graft allowed the backs player of the day Brian Collins to give excellent ball to his back line. This allowed first five Wil van der Geest to get the ball wide as well as scoring a try after running through the entire South Westland forward pack.
Team Captain, Antonio Verhoeven led the team superbly and scored five tries. Centre Mark Leleifua and fullback Clem Swinburn also had strong games.
The attack was very good but the defensive effort was out of the top draw stifling any attack that South Westland was trying to launch.
