Kiwi 1 v Marist
A great start to the Under 6 rugby season was had when Marist faced off against Kiwi 1. Marist has a wealth of experience this year with 7 players having played last season. This showed with some excellent defence from James and Elliot van der Geest, Eamon O’Keefe and Korban Bellis.
New-comer, Mackley Fahey had a strong game, being involved right from the start and scoring a try. He earned his Player of the Day award. O’Keefe was Marist’s other Player of the day and scored twice along with newbie, Max Walklin. J van der Geest, Callan McGuire-Lowe, Bellis and Frank O’Gara all crossed the line, and E van der Geest scored 3 tries.
Wests V Kiwi
Great start to the opening game with Wests playing Kiwi at Westland High. Wests gave some players to Kiwi to play 9 a side and thw parents and Grandparents were treated to a good game of rugby. There was some great attacking play from the Wests players with Lachlan Baird, Conner Greig, Ben Hawker and Micheal Lord all scoring trys. For Kiwi Carlos Spencer and Bradley Thorn both scoring two tries each ih the second half.
Players of the day for Wests were Lochlan Baird for his good attacking play and the other player of the day went to Scott Matthews who ran with good pace and determination to get to the try line and make the final pass to his team mates who scored the trys.
The final score was 35-20 to Wests.
South Westland v Marist
South Westland hosted Marist in the opening round of under 8’s on Saturday in Hari Hari. In an entertaining match in which many players were making their debut at this level, South Westland ran out the winners 35-30, after the score being locked up a 10-10 at half time.
Both teams showed great endeavour in a tough forward battle. Stand out player for South Westland was Willie McBride in a Man of the Match display, in which he scored a brace of tries. Other try scorers for South Westland were Harry Friend & Niall Alexander with 2 each and Jack Dennehy-Coles who was rewarded for a tireless display with a well taken try.
For Marist, player of the Day went to Joshua Robbins who had a great game and scored two tries. Will van der Geest and Griffin Thomas also scored two tries each.
Sean Bain and Arly Bellis played well and Will van der Geest made some great tackles for best tackler award.
Marist v Wests
It took the first half for Marist to blow away the cobwebs in their opening game of the season against a determined Wests side. Whilst the end score was 25-0 Wests made Marist work hard for every point and the score was only 5-0 at half time. The second half saw the Greymouth forwards driving over the ball and make some big runs up the middle of the pack, with forward of the day Mikaere Whitcombe leading the way.
He had close support from Harry Robb, Geordie Gibson and Riley Fairhall. The fast ball was well used by Marist’s speedy backs with Dominic Moles, Derek Chizuni, Jonathan Watts and Matthew Robbins all crossing the line. Mac Gibson also scored for Marist and his thumping tackles earnt him the back of the day. Moles was making his debut for the Under 10’s and deservedly took out the player of the day award.
Marist v Wests
Marist came up against a superbly drilled Wests, going down 35-0. The Hokitika side produced some wonderful running rugby and the green team had to work extremely hard all day. Although they did not score, Marist had some close calls, ably led by Kobie Van der westhuizen and Finn Sharp in the backs – both tackled well and competed for every ball. In the forwards Leo Whitcombe was tireless for the whole game and Cameron White tackled well.
It was a great first game for the season, with all players giving it their best. Wests played strongly the whole game, with the backs getting some good runs with the ball in hand.
Try scorers for Wests team were; Leyton Foster, Kalin Nieper, Caleb Reeves, Bradon Thomas, Kaleb Harris and Jamie Garland. Players of the day were Jamie Garland and Kalin Nieper.
Blaketown v Marist
Marist took an early lead over Blaketown with tries from Liam Olsen, Stephen McInroe, Dylan Robertson, Sam Wood, Lachlan Kelly, Jayden O’Connor and Alec Whitmore.
Blake Robertson and Reuben Clough were fearless on attack. Stephen McInroe displayed good ball skills and was a great team player. Stephen was awarded player of the day.
Marist 67 Blaketown 22
Marist v Blaketown
Marist were focused and working as a well oiled machine. Baylee Kersten tacked hard and ran strong scoring 2 trys. A good team effort with Paddy Davison and Sam Stone also scoring putting the half time score to 22 nil to Marist. A conversion was also kicked in the first half by Terauoriwa Kereopa.
Blaketown came back in the 2nd half, but was put under pressure again by Marist with Kersten scoring another try, and Nukumovahai Langi also dotting down.
Final score was Marist 32, Blaketown 19
Marist’s player of the day for his strong committed play was Baylee Kersten.
