Grey High win first Game of Brockbank –Graves Cup Game
On Wednesday, the Greymouth High School Boys 1st XV travelled over to play Darfield High School in the first round of the Brockbank-Graves Cup. In a tight first half battle Grey High took an early lead through a great forward drive which saw Connor Kilkelly dot down for the first try.
Darfield struck back and the first half turned into a close battle as the game went from end to end. Strong running in the mid field from Brogan Jackson and Joel Lynch saw Grey High go ahead at the break leading 19-14.
A change of strategy saw Grey High attack in the backs and this paid off as Jackson and Lynch along with first five Reuben Mama and Fullback Liam Whata found gaps all over the field, Grey High surged ahead and held a comfortable lead for the rest of the game.
A late try by Darfield threatened to start a come back but a great strip of the ball in the tackle by Jackson saw him get a 50 m runaway try followed by a Navare Jacobs try where he stepped four defenders before running 70m sealed the game for Grey High 45 – 21.
Jordan Campbell was in outstanding form at halfback, delivering quality ball to the backs, while Nuku Langi and William Coghlan played full games in a front row that never went backwards. Kevin Huxtable and Cody Fairhall also ran strongly and consistently got the team over the advantage line
