Close games in Secondary School Rugby

JP II Girls v Grey High Girls

Three close rugby games were played out in Blaketown on Wednesday. In the first game of the day Grey High Girls played against JP2 in a 10 a side game, the first 10 minutes were very physical as both teams tried to gain field position. Grey High first to strike, after being held up over the line, Kayla Doolan scored from the resulting 5m scrum. Two well taken tries by JP2 saw them take the lead into halftime.

A fired up Grey High team hit back straight after the break to go ahead through two tries from Ellie Cox who was outstanding at the breakdown before Tahlia Hammond made a typically strong run weaving past and fending off would be tacklers on a 50 run to the try line. Some more frantic play from both teams failed to result in any further points despite strong running and tackling from April Ingenbleek and Alana Kelly. For Grey High, Doolan and Cox were named as players of the day. Grey High ran out victors 22-10

Grey High U/15 v Buller High U/15

The Grey High under 15 team made the tough decision to leave 2 players out of the playing 22 for the game against Buller, this being a good problem for the coaches to have as players work towards selection for the South Island Tournament. A strong start from the Greymouth team saw them go ahead early after strong play from the forwards created space out wide for the backs where Paddy Davison (JP2) was making it consistently over the advantage line. Tries were scored by Tryton Batchelor, Finn Stanbridge and Rabahn Sopp.

A couple of lapses on defence saw Buller strike back with two well taken tries. After taking a 1 point lead into halftime the Grey High team came out fired up and scored another quick 3 tries in the first 15mins, with good forward tries to Matthew Sheehan, George Watson and Sopp. Again the game turned and Buller struck back again, taking advantage of some poor defence to score twice more to get within 4 points. Despite the efforts of James Bell, Brad Campbell and Iraia De Goldi Greymouth couldn’t hold on as Buller scored a try just before fulltime to win the game 33-30. The Grey High team being unable to convert any of their 6 tries. For Grey High, Finn Stanbridge and Rabahn Sopp were named as players of the day.

Grey High 1st XV v Buller High 1st XV

In the main match of the day, Grey High took on Buller High in the 2nd round of the Brockbank/Graves Cup. Grey High went on the attack early and put Buller under immense pressure as Liam Whata and Jordan Campbell led the team around the field. Sustained pressure saw grey High score 4 tries in the first half to go ahead by 14 at the break. Tries being scored by Brogan Jackson, Reuben Mama, Navare Jacobs and Bryden Stewart. Two more tries straight after the break by Jackson and Joel Lynch effectively sealed the game but Buller managed to strike back with two late tries to give the scoreboard some more respectability as Grey High ran out 39-24 winners. For Grey High, Jackson was again in outstanding form while Caleb Roberts, Kevin Huxtable and Cody Fairhall (JP2) helped lay a strong platform in the forwards for the backs to work from.
