Arthur Wickes Memorial Trophy
The West Coast Heartland team will be aiming to add further silverware to their growing 2013 collection on Saturday, when they take on East Coast for the Arthur Wickes Memorial Trophy.
The late Arthur Wickes
Wickes was a stalwart of the former Excelsior club in Hokitika and played rugby for the West Coast in the early 1970’s and was a devoted West Coast Rugby supporter, later becoming a West Coast Selector before sadly being taken at the young age of 45 due to cancer in 1995. The Arthur Wickes Memorial Trophy
The memorial trophy was first played for in 1996 and last won by West Coast in 2009 then defended 2010, and tomorrow West Coast will be aiming for a victory that will not only bring the trophy back to the West Coast, but a chance to push for outright first in the Heartland Championship. West Coast currently share top spot with Mid Canterbury and Wairarapa Bush.
Arthur’s sister Lynnette Beirne will present the trophy to the winning side on Saturday.
