West Coast, with three wins and two bonus points, had gained sufficient championship points to qualify for the Lochore Cup semi-finals but the team’s endeavors were ruined when the NZRU fined West Coast $2500 and stripped it of live competition points for knowingly breaching the eligibility regulations during the game against Wairarapa Bush which the Coast had won and gained a bonus point for scoring four tries.

Following the hearing the NZRU media statement read: ‘The Sub-Committee heard that West Coast knowingly breached the Player Eligibility Regulations in fielding the ineligible player under another player’s name on the team sheet and the match report.’ It was an unfortunate incident in Heartland competition.

Halfback and captain James Ferguson was again selected for the Heartland team. Newcomer Sam Hannan was outside Ferguson with either Phil Thomson or Origin player Willie Brown at second five-eighth. Andrew Connors was at centre and Maleli Tora a regular on the left wing. Luke Hughes and Robert Thomson appeared at fullback and wing.

Rowan O’Gorman was again the hooker with Blair Mirfin the only prop to start in each game. The locks Chris Mason and Brad Houston also played in every game as did flanker Alan Monk. 36 year old Mark De Goldi added a further four games to his long career.

For the Away games West Coast had difficulty gathering its first choice team as several members of the squad were not always able to obtain leave from work.

* In November (2010) Michael Monk and 2009 Representative Blair Sims were among the 29 Men who died in the tragic gas explosions at the Pike River underground coalmine.
