1935 Season

(Founded, 1890; Affiliated, 1893)
Selectors: Messrs. T.McIntosh, D.R.Dowell and T.P.Ryan

An influx of ex-Canterbury players should have given West Coast an excellent record, but the Union had, generally. another poor season.

Six matches were played, but only once was the side victorious.

The Union missed the services of A.Bowes (to Golden Bay- Motueka.), A.S.Fong (to Wellington), J.B.Taafe, R.Bunt, J.Muir, E.Jones and R.B.Scandrett (retired), and M.Kelly and J.Mahoney, who left the district.

Thirty-four players were called on in these games, the captain, F.Freitas (Hokitika Excelsior) and M.Scandrett (Blaketown) making an appearance on each occasion.

A.Scandrett (Blaketown) a new rep., took part in five games, and was a replacement in the sixth. W.Mann (Greymouth Star) from Canterbury played five times; J. West (Hokitika Kiwi), a new rep. also, M.Davidson (Hokitika Excelsior), C.Schroder (Hokitika Excelsior), W.Hughes (Hokitika Excelsior), B.Kelly (Hokitika Excelsior), M.Olsen (Blaketown), and E.Pfahlert (Hokitika Pirates), four times with Davidson once a substitute, and G.T.Nolan (Hokitika Kiwi) also from Canterbury H.Thiele (Harihari), O.Cox (Wataroa United) and J.Hooper (Greymouth United) another from Canterbury three times, Hooper also replacing a player once.

G.Gilbert (Greymouth United) and R.R.King (Hokitika Excelsior), the Coast’s two All Blacks, played in two matches before leaving on the tour. W.J. McNeight (Blaketown) played twice before transferring to the rival code. Other old reps. who were out were: L.Hughes (Hokitika Excelsior), N.Uniacke (Greymouth United) and W.Vincent (Greymouth United), twice each, and J.Beban (Greymouth Star) and S.Hendry (Wataroa United), once each.

Eight players took part in the Nelson Trial. They were Gilbert, King, Davidson, McNeight, M.Scandrett, Hooper, Uniacke and West, the four first-mentioned going on to the Christchurch Trial with Gilbert and King later appearing in the first Wellington Trial and gaining All Black honours W.Mann, who was not available for the Trials, played for the South Island at the end of the season.

The first match of the season acted as a preliminary Trial, and enabled the selectors to view the players for the subsequent West Coast-Buller XV at Nelson.

West Coast’s team was:
G. Gilbert , W.Munn , J.West , C.Schroder , J.Hooper , W.Hughes , M.Davidson , L.Hughes W.J.McNeight , R.R.King , F.Freitas (Capt.) , A.Scandrett , M.Scandrett , N.Uniacke , B.Kelly

The team which played Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield was:
G.T.Nolan , W.Mann , C.Schroder , E.Pfahlert , J.Hooper , W.Hughes , W.Vincent
O.Cox , J.Walker , F.Freitas (Capt.) , H.Thiele , A.Scandrett , M.Scandrett , M.Olsen , K.Martin.

Late in the game Vincent and A. Scandrett retired with injuries, being replaced by Davidson and W. Aitken.

Walker was a Hokitika Kiwi player, and Martin belonged to the Ross Club.
