Charity
sevens tournament raises
$15,000 for Christchurch
By Matt Kersten

The efforts of two Greymouth rugby enthusiasts came together yesterday for a Queen’s Birthday charity sevens tournament to raise money for Christchurch in the wake of the February killer earthquake.
Adam Gilshnan and John Olsen jointly organised the entire event, which brought together rugby and league sides, and raised more than $15,000 for the Christchurch City Mission through entry takings and business sponsorships.
Although the rain made play less fluid than better conditions might have allowed, there were plenty of rivalries and skills on show.
The Scorpions side from Christchurch, which West Coast players Alan Monk and Rowan O’Gorman played for, beat South Westland to take out the main title.
Suburbs did the league sides proud by winning the bowl fi nal, while Marist claimed the consolation plate.
Josh Costello slotted a 50m pearler to win the drop goal competition and a signed rugby ball.
Fifty local businesses sponsored the tournament.
