Grey Valley centre Cole Jones does a 'Sonny-Bill' Iike offload to a team-mate during a Muir Trophy rugby match against Kiwi, at Ikamatua on Saturday

An impressive display of forward rugby allowed Grey Valley to overpower Marist 36-7, at Ikamatua on Saturday.

Kiwi had their second consecutive win, beating South Westland 17-6 on Cass Square, in Hokitika.

Marist was suffering from a band of missing team members and players out of position and did not stand strong on defence - and Grey Valley made the most of it.

Valley forwards - Blair Mirfin, Brad Clough and captain Mark O'Malley, in particular - made huge gains up the middle of the paddock.

In addition, Luke Hughes was at his counter-attacking best. Marist, on the other hand, had little to celebrate, with only captain Mike Meehan, at lock, making any kind of a diff erence.

A flurry of tries against Marist early in the piece perhaps shocked them; Grey Valley did not stop for a thought as three of their forwards crashed over.

O'Malley was at the front of a black and yellow battering ram that scored the fi rst. Adrian O'Connor pumped his legs as Marist defenders fell off him in the second, and Mirfin was the recipient when Grey Valley won a lineout 5m from Marist's line and drove over for the third.

Alex Webber beat all of Jamie Havill, Hughes and Kurt Becker for a 70m converted try, but Grey Valley did not let it bother them, with Havill pulling one back at the other end in the corner.

Havill was tidy on his wing throughout the match, even willingly throwing himself into a few rucks when the opportunity arose.

Meehan was justifi ably livid at half-time in the Marist camp, while Grey Valley were happy with their 22-7 lead.

Marist pulled together defensively for the next 30 minutes, holding out valley's prods at their line, until lock Ryan Davy found his way through a gap.

Hughes crossed in the corner just before the fi nal whistle, and converted with a kick that bounced on top of the crossbar and went over.
