Final day of the South Island U/16 Rugby Tournament
Game – Plate Final
West Coast 7 vs 0 Marlborough

Marlborough had played West Coast earlier in the tournament and came out comfortable winners. With a number of players in the Marlborough team having played in the U/18 Press Cup competition it was expected that the outcome would be a forgone conclusion and Marlborough would simply have a repeat of their earlier win.

It was obvious from kick off that Coast had a different viewpoint and had no wish to let Marlborough walk away with the trophy.

The game had play running from one end of the field to the other with the only points in the game being scored in the first half by Coast. The points followed a deep kick by Coast winger Jakob Jackson followed up by a good chase by centre Brandon Maitland who scored out wide and was converted by Ben Alexander.

The defence was uncompromising by both teams with Coast flankers Cameron Graham, Quintin Tauwhare and Josh Tomlinson often winning the battle at the breakdown. Taylor Robinson at halfback was smooth and consistent with his ball delivery to first five Ben Alexander. Alexander easily won the tactical kicking battle with his down field punts often sending the Marlborough boys back deep into their own half.

Coach Kevin Church had high praise for centre Brandon Maitland who along with Alexander brought their best games of the tournament to the game. Church said the whole team fronted with their best on the day and the enormous effort in defence was testament to the spirit of the 22 man squad.

Church said it was one of the best groups he has been associated with and thanked team Manager and Physio Karen Burrows for her tireless efforts in assisting the team.
