West Coast Secondary Schools Rugby 7’s Talent on Display

The cream of West Coast Secondary Schools 7’s Rugby talent will be on display this Wednesday, when High School sides from Hokitika and Greymouth compete in the West Coast Secondary Schools Open Boys Sevens at McLean Park Blaketown.

The popularity of 7’s Rugby is evident in the fact that some schools have entered two sides, and West Coast Rugby R.D.O Robbie Maitland highlighted the fact that now Rugby 7’s was an Olympic sport, that High School kids wanted to play it, as there were now clear pathways for them to progress in the game. “Sevens has always been an exciting brand of rugby. In the past we have fielded some very talented players and teams that have competed extremely well at National level”.

“Some years back it was not uncommon for the Coast to threaten the likes of North Harbour and Bay of Plenty at the national sevens. Some may still remember Craig DeGoldi from the Grey area who played for our national sevens team under Gordon Tietjens and more recently there is Ruby Tui who has been named in the national Woman’s Squad after playing well at the nationals for Canterbury. It is a very exciting time for rugby players with the introduction of the Sevens into the Olympics and just adds to the opportunities that rugby already has to offer to those that love to play or referee it which is great” said Maitland

The Round Robin action kicks off at 10.30am this Wednesday, and if there is a clear winner after the final game in pool play, then there will not be any further games and that team will be declared the winner. If however there are two teams in equal contention for that position then a final will be played at 1.30pm. The other teams placing’s will be as they stand at the end of pool play.
