For the fourth successive year West Coast finished bottom of the third division, their only moment of celebration being a 37-32 win over Wairarapa Bush. With only two wins in their past 30 games it is questionable whether there is much benefit to Coast rugby in continuing the policy of having a carload of Christchurch club players trekking weekly over Arthur’ s Pass. A belief could be spreading that the Marist-Albion club is in Greymouth, not on the other side of the Southern Alps. Sure, several of these players have family in Greymouth but if outside players are not providing the desired results why not give the local club players the opportunity.

The previous season’s captain, Regan Dixon, had switched to Marlborough even though he continued to play his club rugby in Christchurch. Peter Nicholls took over the leadership and was the best and most consistent player in the team. Nicholls received excellent support in the loose from Jamie Connors who had previously represented the Coast in 2001 . Jeff Sutherland and Warren Rean were the regular locks while of the front-row players only Tony Oliver appeared in every game. Regular forwards, not already mentioned, include Josai Nasalo, Kevern Thomson, Gordon Iafeta, Nick Lake and Jamie Whitcombe.

Much of the game-plan centred round first five-eighth Anthony Lawry, who proved to be an accurate tactical kicker and directed play very well. He worked well with his halfback, and club mate, Andrew Dunn, who possesses fine passing skills. In midfield big Willie Satala broke through many tackles with his strong, powerful runs. Iowane Seru and James Ward were the best of the three quarters. Other backs to appear regularly were Daniel Tauwhare, Jolan McLean, Haami Tangiora and Pene Suluaqalo.
