ln another disappointing season for West Coast, not only did they fail to win a game, they also failed to register a single championship point and the Rundle Cup was lost to neighbours Buller in the early-season game.

The loss, through injury, of the 2000 captain and points scorer Michael Foster was partly offset by the availability of former Buller captain Thomas Stuart, who replaced the late Bernie Stewart as rugby development officer. The 37-year-old had slowed considerably but his occasional powerful breaks provided some encouragement and inspiration to the team.

Flankers Jamie Connors and Regan Dixon were the best of the players while hooker Jamie Whitcombe and prop Ra Caarle showed promise. Hayden Rasmussen, the former Thames Valley prop who had moved to Christchurch, added bulk in the front row. Jon Chapman captained the team from halfback. Wingers Jolan McLean and Tony Hourston continue to serve the struggling union well, as does hooker Jonson Hauraki. West Coast continues to use club players from Christchurch. A very remote union, few North Islanders appreciate the fact that a player can drive from Christchurch to Greymouth in much quicker time than a local player from Haast could drive the winding 320 kilometers north to Greymouth.
