Having by far their best ever season in NPC rugby, the West Coast results, along with those of East Coast, punctuated the statements made earlier in the year by the smaller unions calling for the NZRFU to retain the present three-division format. After many years at the bottom of the lowest division West Coast produced unprecedented results and attracted excellent crowd support at local matches.

The recently redeveloped Rugby Park enabled club and rep rugby be played on top of a firm, well-drained surface, a far cry from the wet, muddy field of past decades. The investment in upgrading the park has certainly paid dividends. To finish top of the division after the round-robin was probably the greatest achievement in the union’s history.

Captain Michael Foster was the outstanding individual of the division, setting and extending a number of his union’s records. He directed the backs superbly and was an accurate goal kicker. Former Canterbury prop Stu Loe joined his brother Hamish, who had crossed the Southern Alps some years earlier. The well-respected brothers were tremendous organizers with much of the team’s development attributable to them as well as coach Pene Reuben and assistant Bill Haley.

Jonson Hauraki and John Aitken supported Stu Loe in the front row and 20-year-old Brad Tauwhare showed a deal of promise as a big, strong loose forward or lock, James Lamb, Chris Neame and Anthony Jones were a most effective trio in the loose. Grant Breach and Ben Manera had several strong games in midfield, Ross Johnson and Greg Ford being the regular wingers with Glen Williams at fullback.
