West Coast ’s programme was clearly split into two sections. New coach Jon Sullivan had problems from the outset with an incredible 22 players, either through retirement or transfer, missing from the previous season while a number of other players made themselves unavailable for various reasons. Major losses were promising forward Craig De Goldi to Bay of Plenty and the versatile Mark De Goldi to Nelson Bays.

Sullivan’s campaign hit rock bottom when a squad of just 13 travelled to the Seddon Shield tournament at Blenheim over Queen ’s Birthday weekend and a number of Marlborough players had to be called on to represent West Coast. Sullivan resigned in June and Canterbury-based Pene Reuben, a former Thames Valley and North Auckland rep, was appointed, with Bill Haley assisting.

In an attempt to rebuild the squad’s confidence and “change the Coast culture”, they used just two outside players, Craig Ladner (Buller) and Sean Cain (Christchurch), who both had strong Coast links. There were heavy losses in the next two games as 14 players made NPC debuts, but victory over old rivals Buller in the third match was relished as a comer turned. While victories were also within West Coast’s grasp against East Coast and South Canterbury, the team did produce up and down efforts to cement their tag of “roller Coasters” with further heavy losses to Mid Canterbury and Horowhenua-Kapiti.

Experienced first five-eighth and captain Michael Foster was again the dominant figure, scoring the majority of` points, including all in the last five matches and became the first Coast player to score 100 points in a season. Lock Marc Hunter developed tremendously through the NPC and was deservedly the players’ player of the year, while former Coast league star Chris Neame made excellent progress at flanker. The experience of centre Bruce Pearson and props John Aitken and 40-year-old Iupeli lafeta was heavily relied on .
