For the first time since 1990 West Coast recorded a win, and with bonus points from two narrow losses the union climbed off the bottom of the third division table, a position the Coasters had occupied since 1991. Nelson Bays inflicted a heavy defeat on the Coasters in the Seddon Shield game, but in championship matches only Thames Valley and Poverty Bay were able to beat West Coast by big margins. With any luck there could have been upset wins over Marlborough and eventual champions Mid-Canterbury.

Imports from North Canterbury strengthened West Coast in vital areas, and the team could well improve its position in 1995 if it can be kept together. West Coast’s forwards were a gallant lot who never stopped trying, and they gave some of the opposition teams anxious moments. Flanker Simon Riordan was in tremendous form throughout the season. He was well supported by Shane Fletcher and Mark De Goldi. Lock Arthur Gillman was a great worker in the tight and impressed with his mobility around the field. Colin van der Geest, Mark Dodd, Craig Mullan and Willie Iafeta also made strong contributions in the tight.

Fullback Langdon Pearce stood out for his splendid fielding and long punting, while halfback Paul Griffen played some fine games. Hamish Loe gave an outstanding performance in the North Otago game. Graham O’Dea and Abraham Payne were energetic wings.
