For the third season in succession West Coast failed to win a game but the 1993 results were a vast improvement on those of 1992. The scores were much closer and in three of the games Coast led at halftime. The results of the East Coast and North Otago matches could well have been reversed. West Coast’s main problems were lack of concentration at vital times, lack of fitness and limited possession, especially in the lineouts where the team‘s jumpers struggled against their taller opponents. However, the pack did well to win the possession it did.

West Coast had a number of talented young backs who should go on to better things next year. Michael Foster was again the team’s outstanding back with his reliable goalkicking and powerful punting. Paul Griffin had a good first year in representative rugby, impressing with his long, swift passing and elusive running. Daniel O’Donovan was a resolute tackler whose backing up was first rate, while Tony Hourston ran with great determination on the wing. Mike Fitzgerald was a reliable fullback.

Winston Monk, back after a year’s absence, was the most valuable tight forward and he had strong support from Willie Iafeta, Craig Mullan and Brad Boyd. Of the loose forwards Phil Cook and Phil Lamont gave tireless displays, while Gary Frost improved as the season progressed, especially when playing on the flank. Monk captained the team in the early games, lafeta taking over from the Thames Valley match.
