The main feature of the 1987 West Coast team was its inconsistency. lt played very well at times, notably against Marlborough and Nelson Bays, but looked poor in the Thames Valley match and was overwhelmed by Canterbury.

West Coast lacked size in the forwards and suffered in the line outs and scrums. Lack of pace in the loose forwards proved another handicap. Too often the ball was lost forward instead of being laid back for the support. Alistair Coleman was a competent fullback and Denis King and Mark Davidson were hard-running wings. A back injury forced the retirement of well-performed second five-eighth Stu Wyness whose solid play in midfield was missed.

The backbone of the backline was 20 year-old Tony O‘Regan, a highly promising first five-eighth. On occasions he overdid the kicking instead of feeding the outside backs but he set a new record for his union with nine dropped goals for the season. Mark Costello served the team well at halfback but needs to develop a longer pass. Taewa became one of the youngest players to appear in first-class rugby in New Zealand when he played in the last game of the season. Jem Pupich and Andy Hay were the most consistent forwards with Ian Hughson close.

behind them. Lock Darryl Byrne toiled away in the tight and flanker Tony Stanton looked promising. Captain Blair Hopkins announced his retirement at the end of the season. He has given fine service to West Coast and will be missed.

Like all small unions, West Coast suffers from the drift to the big cities. lt has too many clubs for the population and there are too many players at senior level who are not up to standard. lt is hard to find an answer to these problems however. No West Coast players were called on above provincial level in 1987.
