1983 Season

WEST COAST COLOURS: RED AND WHITE HOOPS
(Founded, 1890; Affiliated, 1893)
Selector: Mr A.G.Dawson

The 1983 season proved to be one of the heaviest experienced by West Coast, with twelve representative games, beginning as early as March 3 when East Coast travelled to the South lsland. The highlight, of course, was the fixture against the Lions.

The record of only three wins and nine losses was disappointing, but the most unhappy result was the Seddon Shield challenge against neighbouring Buller. The Coasters in the first half missed some scoring opportunities by very narrow margins and were unfortunate not to put more points on the board, but after the turn-around, Buller, with the sun and wind behind them, coupled with the unerring boot of full-back David Baird, was the only team in it and fully deserved the victory.

Sole selector Arthur Dawson called upon 30 players, with five taking the field for all the twelve games Gavin Cook, Tony Price, Blair Hopkins, Paul Davidson and John Walton. The forwards showed a lack of pace among the three ‘loosies’, but performed creditably against mostly heavier and taller opponents, and the backs occasionally produced brilliant tries, but not often enough. The return of former Junior All Black and Colt Gavin Cook to the first five-eighth position, after being unavailable the previous season, put some solidity in the backs, and the performances of` ‘Tanker‘ Davidson and John Walton as props in all twelve games speaks for their toughness.

Fullback Wayne Gugich proved to be rather inconsistent, with mixed mediocre and brilliant performances, but he still topped the scoring with 68 points. Leading tryscorer was wing Denis King. Most probably a record for the West Coast team was the selection of three brothers to take the field against Mid Canterbury at Ashburton – P.G., B.G., and G.T.Davidson, members of a well-known rugby family, in the southern town of Hokitika.

The season ended late with an October 3 game against First Division side Manawatu, and the score of 30 – 13 to the North Islanders was not a true indication of the run of play, as the Coast team put up a really good performance.
