1964 Season

WEST COAST COLOURS: RED AND WHITE HOOPS
(Founded, 1890; Affiliated, 1893)
Selector: Mr.R.R.King

With four victories and a draw against two losses, West Coast did not experience a bad season, but great disappointment was felt at losing the Seddon Shield to the Hrst challenger after playing so well to gain it from Golden Bay-Motueka. The team was an experienced one, well led by Rogers, who played finely and with vim. His fellow-lock, Lindbom, veteran of 83 games for the Coast, was a tower of strength in the scrummages and in the tight play. The lively loose forwards, side-rankers Vieceli and Caldwell, and the energetic and fiery No. 8, Maughan, were quickly on to opposing backs, and set many movements alight. The front row was comprised of Richardson as hooker, and McMillan and De Goldi as props.

Young Johnson became the regular half-back and did quite well. McAra, returned after a year in Canterbury and again a most useful first five-eighth. Toomey, a new representative, displaced Keehan at second five-eighth. Gray was a sound centre, with Woolhouse, a newcomer, and McNee, the regular wingers. King had a good season at full-back. Rogers played in the Prince of Wales Cup match and represented New Zealand Maoris in Fiji, whilst Wright was a member of the New Zealand Services side that also toured Fiji. Only eight of the 28 players were wearing the Coast jersey for the first time, Maughan having done so last in 1961, and De Goldi in 1959. McPherson, who appeared once only has worn the Coast colours on 59 occasions.
