WEST COAST COLOURS: RED AND WHITE HOOPS
(Founded, 1890; Affiliated, 1893)
Selector: Mr. R. R. King
This Union finished with a good record, retaining the Seddon Shield by attractive football played by lively backs and sound forwards, and with excellent team work the whole being a credit to the Sole Selector. The one loss was away, when the side was without some key men.
The pack was an experienced one, the only new scrummager to become a regular being Hales, a front·row prop. Nelson led the side, himself playing a grand game at breakaway. Garforth and McLean were solid locks, Thompson replacing Garforth in two games. Herrick was most active on the side. Fisher enjoyed success as hooker, receiving fine support from a good prop in Eastgate. McCone again showed up in the No. 8 position.
Breeze developed into a lively second five-eighth, with the reliable and experienced Thomas inside of him. Gillan was the strong running winger he has been in past seasons. The opposite wing found others tried out there before A.J.Lindbom was selected, but when this young player later took a five-eighth post so successfully it would appear that Mr.King still requires a partner for Gillan. Young Lindbom was indeed an asset; he is one of a long line of West Coast representatives. Walker and Rex Stoop divided the centre position, with. Stoop being most in favour, whilst Walker was used in a utility manner. Robinson was the leading half-back, with Lynch playing well when called upon. J.H.Lindbom emerged from retirement to the last line of defence, displacing his nephew on the score of experience, and showed he has lost none of his quality.
Stuart was the former Buller forward ; Martin had played in the combined side at Ashburton against British Isles the previous season; Curtain had represented last in 1940. D.N.S.Walker, five-eighth in 1950, was in Buller. Six of the 27 players to take the field were newcomers.
Breeze and Gillan represented South Island and played in the Trials, Nelson also being an All Black trialist. A.J.Lindbom was a member of the South Island Colts XV.
