JAB Report :Marist vs South Westland U12’s 4-5-19
The 2019 season kicked off on Saturday in fine weather which made for good a high scoring encounter when South Westland took on Marist at Noel McMillan Park.
For the first game of the season the skills on display from both teams were very good.
Marist started the game well with some good play in the forwards which lead to the opening try of the season to Harrison Whittaker.
He was not the only forward to play well with James van der Geest also contributing well with some storming runs and Kade Johnson contributed well in the tight stuff.
Loose forwards Mackley Fahey, Marco Leleifua, Robbie Lyford and James Partridge tackled well and also carried the ball up strongly.
Nathan Milligan lead the back line well and scored two tries, he was well supported by Ben Maxwell and Tyler Spence in the midfield. Payton Guthrie had his kicking boots on with four conversions and he also tackled well. Wing Elliot van der Geest cleaned rucks effectively which lead to some promising raids into South Westland territory. Several players had their first game of rugby and will be much better for the experience.
South Westland finished the game strongly scoring four good tries and showed they will be a challenge for any team this year with some very good defence mixed with strong running on attack.
The final score was 50 -24 to Marist.
