Grey High 1 took out the West Coast Secondary Schools 7s tournament in hot conditions at McLean Park yesterday.
All four teams that entered played with width and pace which kept the games close and entertaining. Westland High punched well above their weight with their under 16 team taking on some of the older students from the other schools.
Nathaniel Hamilton stood out and used his pace to score some good tries while Quinton Tauwhare’s tackling lead to many possession turnovers for his team.
Cody Fairhall was a turnover machine for JP2 while Riley Coleman and Arthur Southorn used their skills and pace to set up try scoring opportunities for their team.
For Grey High 2, Jordan Campbell and Kevin Huxtable used their rugby knowledge to lead their team of mostly league players around the park while Ryan Coleman and Eden Heremia-Bush put in some strong tackles.
Grey High 1 went through the tournament unbeaten and got better as the tournament progressed. Brogan Jackson was the standout player of the day as he helped himself to 5 tries; Reuben Mama used his size to get the team over the advantage line on numerous occasions while Yr 12 students Logan Woodham and Robert Blair showed good pace and skill to spark many try scoring movements.
