Former Marist R.F.C Junior representative and 2012 West Coast Heartland hooker Harry Jones, has signed a contract to play for the Waikato ITM Cup side for the 2014 season after some stand out performances for his Hamilton club Fraser Tech.
Jones’s Rugby education started on the fields of the West Coast, before moving to Christchurch to attend high school at Christchurch Boys High School, where he was a standout in the 1st XV, making his debut as a 5th former and playing right through to the end of his 7th form season.
Jones was also selected two years running for the Canterbury under 18’s side, and was a member of the 2013 Canterbury Colts side, where he has seen many of his former team mates now playing in the Canterbury ITM Cup side.
After graduating from Lincoln University in 2013, the now 21 year old moved to Palmerston North for a graduate job with F.M.G, before being transferred to Hamilton earlier this year, where he joined his current club Fraser Tech.
Despite breaking his wrist at the beginning of the season, he managed to produce some outstanding form towards the back end of the club season which made the Waikato selectors stand up and take notice, and secure his signature for this season.
Jones is aware there is a lot of competition for the hookers berth, and with two ahead of him in the pecking order, he knows he has to train hard and put pressure on the incumbents.
“I started the club season quite late on, but I’m thrilled at being signed, and having a run for the ITM Cup team in the three pre-season games, and I’ll be working hard towards hopefully getting my full debut at some stage this season” Jones said.
Waikato started with a win against Wellington on Saturday night, and host six time ITM Cup Champions Canterbury this Friday night in Hamilton.
