Homegrown Rugby 7’s Star Visits Coast

Former John Paul II High School pupil Ruby Tui has had a stellar rise with her 7’s Rugby career taking off over the past few seasons, and recently she made a trip back home to help inspire the next batch of potential West Coast 7’s stars, at the junior 7’s tournament held by the West Coast R.F.U.

West Coast J.A.B Chairman John Olsen was thrilled to have Ruby attend the event and speak to teams about her progress, and the potential career paths for our players “”Ruby was happy to be back on the Coast and used the opportunity to tell young players to give rugby 100% and that they could also achieve the highest level of success”

Rugby sevens is definitely Ruby’s sport of choice. She likes the one-on-one, confrontational nature of the game, and feels there are great opportunities within the sport given the backing from High Performance Sport New Zealand and the New Zealand Rugby Union.

With Sevens included in the Olympic schedule for the first time in 2016, Ruby dreams of competing at the 2016 Olympic Games. But training hard and playing well enough to be on the New Zealand team competing in the next World Cup matches would be a great start, she says.
